Is Hydroponic Agriculture Organic? The Fight For The Future Of Organic Is Heating Up

Last month, TIO Farms and other hydroponic farmers gathered to address what may be the most contentious issue in all of eco-agriculture: organic certification. What does it mean to be "organic"?

Unlike other nations (or areas, such as the EU), India cannot legally extend organic certification to crops that are not produced in soil. Hydroponic and aquaponic food is often cultivated in continually running water in which nutrients are dissolved. Hydroponic organic certification proponents claim that their farms can be more energy and water efficient than soil-based farms, that they can reduce transportation costs by being built almost anywhere (including indoors, right in the middle of cities), and that they can be just as sustainable and environmentally friendly as any traditional farm.
